Part
V: France and Germany
Sunday August 14 to Friday Sept 1

| From San Sebastian we headed north up the Atlantic coast to Biarritz,
which is reknowned for its waves and had hundreds of surfers on its beaches. |

| After several days heading up the Atlantic coast, we cut inland
heading north and east, towards Germany. |

| A bike path along the river in Freiburg (Germany). From
Freiburg we headed north through the Black Forest to Karlesruhe, where
we stayed with friends, Gord and Sue (see below). |

| A day trip to Strasbourg with Gord and Sue. A beautiful city
with a mixture of French and German cultures. |

| Fortifications that were once part of the Maginot line, a massive
defense work constructed to protect France from Germany (prior to WWII) |

| When it came time to leave, Gord and Sue elected to ride with
us for most of our first day. Here we cross the Rhine in a small
ferry. |

| In addition to the company of our friends, their familiarity
with the myriad of (interconnecting and often poorly labelled) bike
paths was invaluable. |

Shadows from the setting sun of one of our last days in Germany.
The next day I took a train to the coast and a ferry to England to visit
friends in London, while Katharine continued cycling north to visit a friend
in the Netherlands
